The Communication Reset

The Communi-cation Reset

The last month has taught me a lot about human connection and the challenges that a lack of connection seeds across the board. We’re 4 weeks into our temporary reality of at-home work/living, and we’ll undoubtedly continue to shelter-in-place for another month if not longer.

During that time, there is an agency to manage and clients who require production. There are children here now: one working from home and another deep into her spring semester of college. A third stayed in Boston to ride out the storm. Each one of us must stay connected to the best of our abilities and move our lives forward, and with it, I am observing a subtle and positive shift in communication.

"Language and clarity of message is important for us as we make decisions in a world where the immediate take-back doesn’t seem to have the same acceptance it did last month. Our decisions have more gravitas than they have in the recent past."

Before we were all sheltered-in-place, there was a steady movement toward shallow, soundbite communication. Conversations that used to last hours have steadily reduced to texts and quick hit talking points. People don’t want information that requires in-depth explanation and perspective, they want the bottom line because they are being asked a question and need the answer immediately.

Instead of thought, there was search. Instead of discussion, there was search. Instead of debate, there was single-sourced and one-sided commentator opinion. Everyone is guilty because, well, we were all doing it.

However, what I’ve observed in the past month is people forgoing quick hits to re-engage on phone calls and video conferences. They want voice and they want visuals. They desire human connection.

We will come out of this crisis with renewed opportunities to connect more thoughtfully than we did before. To listen better, and to engage in dialogue that digs deeper and results in stronger collaboration. Answers that will be discussed in person, and yes, via video conference when necessary. It seems that our innate desire for human connection that we may have recently ignored is an itch that needed scratching.
